2017 Events Calendar – Smugglers Adventure & Hastings Castle

February

Smugglers Adventure, Hairy Jack Trail, 11th – 19th. 

Notorious smuggler ‘Hairy Jack’ will be leading the celebrations as Smugglers Adventure re-opens for a new season during the February Half Term Holidays. Younger visitors are invited to follow ‘Hairy Jack’s trail through the underground caverns, passages and tunnels on a voyage back through time to the heyday of smuggling. There will also be a themed quiz available for all visitors to test their skills.

March

Smugglers Adventure, Book reading, Saturday 4th.

Local writer Fiona Cullen-Skowronski is doing a book reading of her paperback ‘The Smuggler’s Caves’ here at Smugglers Adventure between 1pm-3pm. Copies of the book are available for purchase during this time. Please note that copies can only be purchased in cash.

Smugglers Adventure, World Women’s Day, Wednesday 8th. 

Smugglers Adventure is hosting a week long event in honour of World Women’s Day on Wednesday March 8th.The event will run from Saturday the 4th of March until Sunday the 12th.   Activities include an informative trail and quiz for visitors to take part in.Women played a very important role in the Smuggling of contraband, including the likes of famous females, Anne Bonny and The Lioness of Britanny. Women were also masters of hiding contraband in order to sneak items past the Preventative Men, and were said to wrap yards of silk and lace around their bodies and conceal them with their skirts.

Smugglers Adventure, Torchlight Tour, Saturday 11th. SOLD OUT

An out of hours evening tour of St Clements caves by torch light. A maximum of 30 people are taken on a dramatic exploration of the caves, which cover a total area in excess of five square kilometres, in the company of an expert guide whose flickering lantern provides the only illumination.The tour begins in the 45-metre long Monk’s Walk with its 23 pairs of arched candle niches.Visitors learn all about the bizarre re-discovery of the caves by the Victorian Joseph Golding and the geology which enabled them to form in the first place. Tickets are £10 per person. The tour is from 5pm – 6pm. To book your place please call 01424 422964 or email [email protected]

Smugglers Adventure, Red Nose Day, Friday 24th.

Smugglers Adventure, Sea Shanty Performances, Saturday 8th. 

Local Hastings sea shanty group, RX Shantymen will be performing three sets of popular shanty tunes, taking you back in time to the days when smuggling on the Sussex coast was rife.  The RX Shantymen are an acapella folk group with a mission to spread the gospel of shanty singing and maritime music, as well as entertain their audience and have a good time doing it. The RX Shantymen will be performing at St Clements Caves at 12-12:30pm, 1-1:30pm and 2-2:30pm, with breaks in between the performances. Hastings Castle, Easter Egg Hunt, Saturday 15th. 

Hundreds of chocolate eggs are set to be hidden around the grounds and castle and children will have the tasty task of tracking them all down. Organisers are also offering the first 100 children through the door a FREE medium sized boxed Easter egg. Entry is £3 for children under 12 and £1 per adult ,babes in arms are free of charge. There is no need to book in advance you can just turn up on the day.

Both attractions shut for winter in November. Meanwhile, Blue Reef Aquarium Hastings is open daily from 10am.
